Description

Pre-conference Study Groups at University College London:
Two in-person study groups will be held at UCL ahead of the conference, each designed to help attendees familiarize themselves with Guerra’s work and ideas. These events are free of charge, with a maximum of 15 participants per session. Upon registration, participants will receive a copy of the paper to be discussed—marking the first time Guerra’s work has been translated into English.

The study groups are open to professionals who work with children and adolescents and have an interest in psychoanalysis. Attendees will engage in a discussion of Guerra’s papers and explore contemporary developments in child development research and psychoanalytic theory. If interested, but unable to attend in person, registrants may opt to receive the paper only.

Study Group Dates and Topics:

  • November 19, 2024: The Importance of Objects in the Symbolization Process: Tutor Objects
This paper introduces the concept of the "tutor object," which differs from transitional objects and relates to the symbolization process in infants, adults, and the arts. Guerra provides examples from infant observation, clinical cases, and art, illustrating the importance of intersubjectivity. The tutor object emerges as a co-creation with the other, playing a role in preserving affective memory and providing psychic continuity.

  • January 15, 2025: False Motor Self: A Version of Subjectivation that Collapses in Hyperactivity
Guerra examines ADHD, emphasizing the importance of relational factors alongside biological aspects in diagnostic evaluation. He warns against "hyperactive" or rushed diagnoses, advocating for a multidisciplinary approach. Guerra also considers how unresolved parental ghosts and collective societal trauma may impact the development of the intersubjective self, with cultural pressures on children to maintain intense schedules potentially serving as a means to ward off primitive anxieties.

Conference Paper for Registered Attendees:
Upon registering for the conference, attendees will receive a copy of The Rhythm in Psychic Life: Dialogues between Psychoanalysis and Art. This paper serves as an introduction to Guerra’s unique approach to psychoanalysis, blending his thoughts with reflections on art and offering insight into his ways of thinking and living psychoanalysis.

*If you are a psychotherapist or counsellor residing in an active conflict zone, you are eligible to attend this event free of charge (regardless of whether you are a bpf member or not). Please email membership@bpf-psychotherapy to enquire about a ticket.
