Psychodynamic and Jungian Theory for Qualified Practitioners

Course length: 1 year. Delivery: Online (one Saturday per month).

This certificate course is designed specifically for any qualified counsellor, psychotherapist, psychologist or other mental health professional who is not trained psychodynamically but wants to learn enough psychodynamic theory to be able to bring psychodynamic thinking to their practice.

You will need to have current professional clinical registration with a recognized professional body such as Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), British Psychological Society (BPS), British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) and Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP).

It doesn’t matter if you come from a background in clinical psychology or practice in humanistic, person-centred, existential, CBT or any other therapeutic modality. All you need for this course is to be a practicing clinician (see above), have a professional interest in psychoanalytic, psychodynamic and Jungian thinking, and have a willingness to enhance your existing practice through engagement with psychoanalytic, psychodynamic and Jungian thought and theory.

Applications for an October 2025 start date open from January 2025.

The programme is pluralistic in approach. It prioritises contemporary psychoanalytic, psychodynamic and Jungian theory, whilst also drawing on research findings and relevant ideas from other disciplines. Participants will be encouraged to consider the implications of psychoanalytic, psychodynamic and Jungian theory for their existing therapeutic practice, but within a broader empirical and interdisciplinary framework.

Participants will be enabled to integrate psychoanalytic, psychodynamic and Jungian thinking and ways of working into their own approach to psychotherapy and examine their own and others’ practice through a psychodynamic lens. The programme encourages a respect for difference and otherness, and as well as considering the differences in therapeutic modality participants will bring, it will consider issues of ethnicity, gender, sexuality and social justice and how these factors can shape and inform clinical practice from a psychoanalytic perspective.

Participants will learn about the theoretical and empirical foundations of a psychodynamic/Jungian approach and how to develop a psychodynamic/Jungian sensibility and frame. You will learn about theories of psychic change, and how our patients’ feelings about us and our feelings about our patients affect the therapeutic relationship. The course will also cover attachment theory, neuroscience, theories of development, approaches to trauma, working with conflict, defence and resistance, and navigating difference and power dynamics in the clinical encounter.

The course is held entirely online, between 10am and 2pm, and will take place one Saturday a month for 10 months (October – July). We have chosen to hold the course at weekends to allow you to continue your work as a therapist alongside the course.

The day will consist of two theory seminars led by senior analysts from the psychoanalytic and Jungian traditions. You will learn from a diverse group of senior clinicians and thinkers, who are experts in their subject areas. Each seminar will be followed by a facilitated discussion.

For those who want it, we will organise participants into peer supervision groups so that they could discuss their learning and clinical application together.

It doesn’t matter if you come from a humanistic, person-centred, existential, CBT or any other therapeutic background. All you need for this course is a professional interest in psychoanalytic and Jungian thinking and a willingness to enhance your current practice through engagement with psychoanalytic and Jungian thought and theory.

This course may be used as preparation for you to apply to these other trainings.

You do not have to be in your own personal analysis with a psychoanalytic or Jungian Analyst to do this course, but you would need to have this in place if you want to pursue further qualifying training with us.

Applications for an October 2025 start date open from January 2025. Register your interest to be the first to receive updates about this training.

To apply for this course, you will need to download and complete the application form and email it to our Training Manager, Gonçalo Birra: [email protected]

The application form will be posted here in early January 2025.

It has been wonderful to have studied at the bpf, it has changed so many perspectives in my life and I truly cherish this rich experience.

Catia, bpf Student

Simply, it exceeded all my expectations, and sufficiently impressed and enthused me to consider a future career in psychotherapy. On a personal level it has changed me; something that has been accelerated by beginning my own personal analysis. I find myself thinking about non-verbal communications much more as a consequence of having attended the course.

The ‘course has allowed to dip my toe into the analytic world and provided a broad overview of the analytic landscape. It has enhanced my understanding of psychoanalytic ideas and I’ve particularly benefited from speaking to experienced clinicians. The discussion groups in particular have been useful to clarify my own ideas and get a different perspective from others. Overall, it has helped me to determine if I would like to pursue work in this field.
